PrizePicks Case Study
Building and scaling product design at PrizePicks
Led the growth of the design team from 2 to 12 team members and transforming design into a strategic driver of product innovation and business growth.
The challenge
When I joined PrizePicks, the design function was still in its early stages.
There were two designers working reactively with no formal process, no design system, and limited collaboration with product and engineering.
Design was viewed primarily as a service function and reactive to the roadmap. The roadmap was not being influenced by research insights and was driven primarily top down from competition comparison, or short term revenue focus. So getting design and research into the product delivery process was the first objective so we could help drive the roadmap and early execution into key projects.
The team grew so fast so there was a bit of design debt to clean up because engineer iterated directly without designers. So getting the design team into a position to be collaborators and shift how product was being delivered was my focus.
We made strategic hires in the user research team, sr designers, and the design system - and rebuilt the design culture at PrizePicks.
It was the first time in my career that I’ve had the chance to work with so many talent people at a scale of this size.
My role
I joined as Lead Product Designer and eventually became Sr. Manager (reporting directly to the VP of Product Chris Stango) responsible for scaling the design team, leading key product initiatives, and embedding research, design systems, and sprint practices into the organization.
Success outcome
Scaled the design team to 12, established new design processes, launched major product features like Live Lineups, Live Scoring, Back office redesign, design system, and contributed to significant user and revenue growth.
Impact
By scaling design as a core strategic function, we transformed PrizePicks’ operational efficiency, product quality, and business growth.
Our design culture focused on delivering high-quality, research-backed work at speed — supporting the company’s growth into the fastest-growing daily fantasy sports platform in North America.
